Hockey In August
For those of you that do not have a husband who plays hockey, can you believe hockey in August? It has already begun in our household.
The first official team practice was August 23rd. This is not John’s regular hockey team in Kamloops. It is the one that is going to the BC Senior Games. The team will be playing on the 60 plus team that is representing the Kamloops area.
This is serious business, they want to win this year. With that being said the team will be practicing twice weekly for the next three weeks. They even have a coach this year. Larry Sokoloski, who has lots of coaching experience, has volunteered his time in getting the boys to play as a team.
The BC Senior Games this year will be jointly hosted by the communities of Comox Valley & Campbell River September 15th thru September 18, 2010. With the support of two regional districts- Comox Valley & Strathcona and four municipalities - the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox, the Village of Cumberland and the City of Campbell River.
As many as 3,300 seniors are expected to compete in twenty-eight different events. The events include archery, badminton, bocce, bridge, carpet bowling, cribbage, cycling, darts, disc golf, dragon boat racing, five pin bowling, floor curling, golf, horseshoes, ice curling, ice hockey, lawn bowling, one-act plays, pickleball, slo-pitch, snooker, soccer, square dancing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, tract & field, and whist.
Hockey will be played in both Courtenay and Comox. I am excited about that, I’m going to the Games too.
I am an Island girl, born in Cumberland. Although I moved at a young age, I have many relatives on the Island and have always gone back to visit. My parents retired to the Island and visits were more common then, than now, when both were still alive.
My favorite Aunt and Uncle still live in Cumberland. We will be staying with them. It will be good to have a visit as we haven’t seen them in well over a year when they visited us last in Kamloops. Not only that, my Uncle who is Italian, makes the best spaghetti sauce ever and my Aunt, who is more like my sister, makes the best home-made scones and desserts.
In closing, good luck team Kamloops 60 plus! Have a great trip to the Island.
